“Steven builds self-confidence in his students by strengthening independent learning instead of spoon-feeding the content.”
I offer customized tutoring for middle school, high school, and adult students in:
- critical thinking
- writing
- grammar
- literature appreciation and analysis
- developing your writer’s voice
Clear thinking results in clear writing. I engage students in discussions that encourage them to generate original ideas, support their opinions, and organize their thoughts. Then they translate those skills into their writing.
Through close analysis, students learn to understand and write about various kinds of literature with confidence.
I teach grammar in the context of meaningful writing, not as isolated skills. When we care about WHAT we say, we care about HOW we say it.
I charge on a sliding scale, from $60/hour to $120/hour. My time is valuable, but I try to accommodate clients who are under financial stress.
Please take a look at my website. It’s informative, easy to navigate, and it looks great! The quality of my website is a reflection of the quality of my work.

Working with Steven for over two years was one of the most helpful experiences I have had in education.
In high school, I struggled with reading comprehension and organizing my ideas. Also, my writing didn’t have any rhythm to it. Steven truly listened to my struggles with writing, and was very good about checking up on my progress, not only on what I could do, but also how I felt.
- Julia, college freshman
Steven gave me a much better introduction to Shakespeare than I received in English class. At first it wasn’t my favorite type of literature, but he showed me how complex and beautiful the writing is, and I started to really like it.
- Andrew, 11th grade
Steven is a compassionate, honest, flexible, and enthusiastic tutor, and I recommend him to anyone who feels like they are falling behind in English. I’m a STEM student, but because of him I’m doing well in all of my college classes that require writing, not just in English class.
- Lander, college freshman
Steve is sensitive to the unique educational needs
of his students. In addition, he shows much flexibility, humor, and a genuine caring for his students, who consistently evaluate him as an excellent tutor.

Before I met Steven, I always avoided writing. Although my parents hired many tutors to try and improve my writing, none of them worked as well as Steven did.
- Juan Miguel, 8th grade
Steven made writing and studying English fun. We analyzed and discussed poems and short stories such as “Monet Refuses the Operation” and “Gryphon.” He understood that although I am a creative person, I sometimes have trouble coming up with ideas. He was patient with me, and over time, my writing improved.
- Amari, 12th grade
Steven helped me with my college application essays. At first it was frustrating because we kept rewriting them, but I could see how each new draft was better than the last one. I think my essays were a major reason why I got accepted to two of my top choices.
- Kaitlin, college freshman
Steven is helping me get rid of many of my bad writing habits, such as mixing past and present tense. He’s hilarious, cool, and easy to talk to, and I enjoy the time I spend with him.
- Alex, 8th grade
Having hired tutors for my nephews before who were lackluster and dispassionate, I think Steven’s most valuable trait as a tutor is that he genuinely cares about teaching and his students. It comes across in his demeanor, his preparedness for each session, and his engagement during the lessons.
- Thomas, uncle of 7th and 9th graders
Steve is one of the best tutors I’ve had because he really listens. He’s also a fun tutor, a cool person, and a really nice teacher!
- Henry, 7th grade
Our son works so much better with Steven than he does with either me or his dad.
-Holly, parent of 11th grader
